The name of this blog came from a funny story in a not-so-funny situation. Gabby has been very lucky to have avoided any hospital visits since her diagnosis. We know there will be some in the future, but for now we have eluded that. One night we were sitting on the couch...
"I'm just checking my sugar and then I'll go to bed mom."
"OK" I continued knitting in my chair.
Gabby giggled and that caused me to look up.
"It just says HI." she said.
Fleeting panic in my eyes caused her to jump up out of her seat. Laughter in her eyes turned to fear.
"Gabby, that is not good! We need to take care of this right now."
I grabbed her back up meter, it's a different brand and sometimes reads differently. I was hoping to get an actual number off of it. I did. 596.
Never had she been this high before, at least not when we were testing her. No ketones. Thank goodness. She began drinking water after she bolused. An hour or so later she was cruising back down, back into the 200's and lowering.
For the life of me I could not figure out WHY she was laughing at having a HI show up on her meter. Maybe the high sugar had made her delirious? I know it happens.
"Hey Gab?"
"Yeah?"
"Just wondering why you thought it was so funny when your meter read HI?"
"Well..." she said sheepishly, "I thought when it read HI it was saying Hello."
We both laughed, not only because it was funny but because we had dodged another bullet. So now that is a little inside joke between us. My Meter Says Hello.
