it would be this one. It completely sums up who I am, who I have become and how I feel about our overindulgent society in general. Mike and I still dream of selling up and moving to the mountains, "living off the fatta the lan" as Lenny says in Of Mice and Men. A lot of times I look around us and I think, "We have TOO much." and we do. We have spent the last year stripping down. Trying to really weigh out what things are truly needed in life. Of course I do think having some luxuries in life is fine but when it becomes a race to get the next best thing...that is where it crosses a line. I was thinking to myself about the simple life. What things would be indispensable to me? Of course my people, people are number one. Other things I would want around to keep me happy.
1. Pets
2. Books
3. Knitting and sewing stuff
4. My Camera
I love my computer but I could give it up, then I would have to add some journals to my list for me to jot down my musings.
Anyway, back to the song. Here it is:
Society by Eddie Vedder
It's a mystery to me
we have a greed
with which we have agreed
You think you have to want
more than you need
until you have it all you won't be free
society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
When you want more than you have
you think you need
and when you think more than you want
your thoughts begin to bleed
I think I need to find a bigger place
'cos when you have more than you think
you need more space
society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me
there's those thinking more or less less is more
but if less is more how you're keeping score?
Means for every point you make
your level drops
kinda like its starting from the top
you can't do that...
society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me
society, have mercy on me
I hope you're not angry if I disagree
society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me
You can listen to the song here.
Awesome song, I love Eddie! Danny used to sing some of his songs to me (and some Bob Marley, lol) back when we were dating.
You know of course, that I totally agree, as I've been on a very similar journey.
Got room in those mountains for us? ;)
